African Church Grammar School Emerges Champion at Adebiyi Habib Foundation Debate Competition
The African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, has emerged winner of the grand finale of the Adebiyi Habib Foundation Debate Competition, organised in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The grand finale, which brought together senior secondary school students from public and private schools across Ogun State, was held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta.
African Church Grammar School Takes First Place
After an engaging display of knowledge, confidence and critical thinking, African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, secured first place in the competition.
The school received a cash prize of ₦150,000 alongside a full HP desktop computer.
Reverend Kuti Memorial School emerged as the first runner up, receiving ₦100,000 and an HP printer, while Ago Iwoye High School, Ago Iwoye, emerged as the second runner up, winning ₦70,000 and an HP printer.
Government and Community Leaders in Attendance
The event attracted notable government officials and education stakeholders who came to support the students and celebrate the importance of education, public speaking and intellectual development among young people.
Among those in attendance were the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako Oyedele; the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi A. Arigbabu; the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Adijat Adeleye; and the SSA to the Governor in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Hon. Kola Salako.
Also present were Hon. Falana Jamiu; Hon. Jinadu Ibrahim, who represented the LASUBEB Board; and the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Oluwatosin Mariam Oloko.
According to a press statement released by the Adebiyi Habib Foundation on Sunday, the competition was designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their communication, research, reasoning and public speaking skills.
Investing in the Next Generation
Beyond the prizes and recognition, the debate competition represents an investment in the intellectual and leadership potential of young people across Ogun State.
For the participating students, the experience provided more than an opportunity to compete. It offered a platform to express ideas, engage with important issues and develop the confidence needed to become future leaders.
The Adebiyi Habib Foundation expressed hope that, over the next five years, beneficiaries of the programme will become proud ambassadors of their schools, communities and Nigeria at large.
With initiatives such as this, the foundation and its partners are contributing to a culture where young people are encouraged not only to learn, but also to think, speak and lead.
